Apexstone material brief

Pandora Quartzite Kitchen Countertops & Islands

The pain point: cut-outs and drawings that drift between approval and cutting

Most rework on Pandora kitchen projects does not come from the stone itself — it comes from what happens between the approved drawing and the saw. A fabricator approves a layout, then a plumber confirms the sink sits 20 mm further left, a cooktop model is substituted at the last minute, or the client changes a waterfall return to a full-height splash after cutting has started. On a fine-veined marble, a moved cut-out is a small edit. On Pandora, with its large brown floral movement, it is a different kind of problem: a cut-out shifted even 20 mm can land on the focal bloom, a seam that was matched on paper no longer aligns, and the slab has no spare patterned area to re-nest into. The result is an unusable island top worth thousands of dollars, a second slab purchase, and a kitchen delivery that slips by weeks.

Importers and wholesale fabricators feel this twice over. The rework is billed to nobody — the stone supplier blames the template, the installer blames the drawing, and the distributor in the middle absorbs the cost while the homeowner waits.

The fix is structural, not diplomatic: the drawing must be the single source of truth, and it must be built on the images of the actual slabs that will be cut — with cut-outs, seams, edges and finish frozen before the first blade touches the stone. That is exactly how every Pandora countertop set is produced at Apexstone.

CNC sink cut-out machining on Pandora quartzite countertops
CNC cut-out machining: sink, cooktop and tap openings are cut only after the template is approved on the layout drawing.

What the drawing-first process actually locks down

Every Pandora set starts with nesting on the images of the actual slabs. The island is placed first, then waterfall returns and full-height splash panels, then the perimeter runs — 60 in and 72 in base runs, a 36 in sink run, whatever the cabinet plan calls for. Because the layout is drawn on the photographed stock you will actually receive, pattern continuity is decided where it matters: the largest bloom is centred or deliberately offset on the island, seams sit where the movement can be matched or where a sink or cooktop run naturally breaks the field, and book-matched waterfall legs are confirmed only where the slab has enough patterned area in the right zone.

Cut-outs for undermount sinks, cooktops and taps are machined on CNC equipment to the manufacturer's template — and only after that template is part of the approved package. If a sink model changes, the change goes back through the drawing, the layout is re-issued, and the cut is re-approved. Slow? Slightly. But compare it to the alternative: a moved cut-out on a large-pattern quartzite cannot be undone, and a replaced island top means a second slab, a second round of freight, and an installation date that quietly disappears.

Reference thicknesses are 2 cm (3/4 in) and 3 cm (1-1/4 in), with mitred build-up to the deep 2 in edge seen in most published kitchens at a lower weight and cost than solid stock. Finishes — polished, honed or leathered — are also frozen on the same drawing, so what was sampled is what ships.

What this is worth at the counter

For a fabricator, the drawing-first sequence converts the most expensive category of Pandora rework — pattern-disrupting cut-out moves — into a zero-cost email exchange. For an importer or distributor, it removes the classic three-supplier blame loop: the workshop that cuts the stone also controls the drawing, the finishing, the inspection and the packing, so a question about a seam or a cut-out is answered by the same desk that made the decision. Pieces are labelled in installation order, polished faces protected, so site crews install a numbered kitchen rather than solving a pattern puzzle on the bench.

There is a sales argument in it as well. A Pandora project resold to a homeowner is judged on pattern continuity, and a set nested by one workshop will always beat pieces sourced from three. Distributors who quote from our layout drawings present a kitchen that already exists on paper — seams resolved, movement placed, cut-outs templated — which shortens the approval cycle with the end client and protects the margin on the most visible surface in the sale.

Buyer value in one line: the island top that arrives is the island top that was drawn — no pattern surprises, no re-nested slabs, no weeks of silence while three suppliers argue about whose cut-out was wrong.

Frequently asked by trade buyers

Can we change a cut-out position after approval? Yes — through the drawing. The change is re-nested on the actual slabs, the layout is re-issued for approval, and CNC cutting proceeds only from the approved version. On a large-pattern quartzite this is the only safe way to move an opening.

Do you accept single-piece orders? Yes. Single-piece orders are accepted for sample and replacement work, and go through the same drawing, cutting and inspection sequence as full sets.

What do we receive with the order? Shop drawing, actual-slab layout, cut-out template and a piece schedule, plus slab images for client presentation. Every piece is inspected against the numbered layout before the container is loaded.

Which finish suits a busy family kitchen? Leathered keeps the brown floral movement but adds texture that hides fingerprints and water spots; polished maximizes the crystal sparkle and deepens the brown; honed gives a matte, country feel. The finish is frozen on the drawing so what you sampled is what ships.

Send the cabinet plan — get the kitchen back on paper first

Send the cabinet plan, sink and appliance models, preferred thickness and finish, and the destination port. Your Pandora set comes back as a layout on the actual slab images — seams, cut-outs, vein direction and waterfall returns all resolved before the first cut. Single-piece orders are accepted.
